About Us

The Art Therapy in School Service is a cooperative of five state registered art therapists with experience of working with children and adolescents in diverse settings including schools, children's care homes and the NHS throughout England. Our aim is to provide a complementary service to schools using art therapy to address the needs of children with emotional and behavioural difficulties.

We work individually with children in the separate schools and organisations. We work together to market ourselves, establish art therapy in schools, and provide education about art therapy. More importantly we support each other in our practice by participating in regular peer supervision and organisational meetings where we discuss practical issues as well as issues of our practice.

Art Therapy Package

Schools are encouraged to purchase art therapy for a minimum of one day a week for one school year. A short-term intervention may not give enough time for a child to explore strong and complex emotions and consequently may present difficulties for the art therapist when evaluating the efficacy of Art Therapy within that time.
It is important for art therapists to work closely with staff members and parents/carers and a one-day contract enables us to arrange meetings frequently and flexibly.

One day of art therapy, each week, over 39 weeks provides:

• 4 individual sessions of art therapy
(group work may be arranged as appropriate, e.g. one group session and 2 individual sessions)

• Availability to see parents/carers

• Attendance at multi-disciplinary meetings

• Feedback for staff (written reviews termly or annually, weekly verbal feedback, etc. )

• Administration (record keeping of each session, etc.)

• Staff presentations and workshops by request

• Schools are asked to provide art materials for art therapy.

The cost of one day is £210. Over the course of an academic year ( 39 weeks), this equates to £8190. This fee is subject to review under Agenda for Change.

Workshops

The package offered by The Art Therapy in School Service includes a workshop for staff, which we try to facilitate at an early stage of our work in a school. For vulnerable young people an integrated system of support is very important, and our aim is to demystify the art therapy process so that a strong working liaison with staff can be established. Workshops are organised according to the needs of a school, but usually run between one and two hours. A typical session would include:

• An exploration of the basic principles of art therapy practice.
An experiential component where staff will have the opportunity to use a variety of art materials. Structured   exercises will be used to help staff gain an insight into how making artwork can be used as a form of non-verbal   communication, or as a way of expressing and thinking about complex feelings.

• A case study presentation, illustrating some of the ways in which art therapy may be used to facilitate positive   change for a child.

• Time for discussion and to answer any other questions that staff may have.
The Art Therapy in School Service is also able to facilitate workshops for other allied professionals such as   members of a Behavioural Support Team, Additionally Resourced Centres etc.
